Do Your Socializing Outside of Working Hours to Get More Done

The workplace can be a great place to make friends. But if you socialize too much on the job, you’re not going to get as much work done. It’s better to do your socializing outside of working hours.

At a company I worked at, there were some employees who seemed to work overtime a lot. While it’s true that they were higher up on the “corporate ladder” and have more responsibilities, there were also employees who were fresh out of school (or still in school) and worked overtime.

At first, I thought the employees higher up on the ladder simply had a lot more work to do. But from observing their work habits, it was clear that their time management skills could use some work. And that was likely a cause of them having to work overtime regularly.

Every hour or so, they would chat with someone that was about something non-work related. Or someone would come up to them to have a chat. As a result, they were interrupted a lot and it slowed down their productivity. It’s no wonder why they have so much overtime.

If they left their socializing outside of working hours, their overtime hours would drop a lot. Maybe they won’t have to work overtime at all.

If you want to get more done and work less overtime, leave your socializing outside of working hours. With less overtime, you’ll have a better work-life balance. And you’ll also save your company’s money from paying for overtime hours.
